Humanitarian context

In 2022, over 1.5 million people (half of them children) needed assistance to stay alive in northern Mozambique, an emergency linked to the violent altercations in the northern province of Cabo Delgado. 

Throughout the country, approximately 1.1 million people are acutely food insecure and the number of internally displaced persons increased from 750,000 in 2021 to 1 million in 2022. Mozambique is one of the four African countries most exposed to extreme climate shocks: Cyclones, tropical storms and floods.

Our activity

Since the reopening of a permanent Action Against Hunger headquarters in Mozambique in 2021, the organization has focused on the north of the country and has increased its emergency response capacity.

In 2022, they improved access to nutrition and health services in communities affected by difficult-to-reach conflict, providing health and nutrition care to nearly 12,000 children under five in several districts. In addition, they provided emergency food aid to over 26,000 households and improved access to water, sanitation and hygiene services for 25,000 people in different areas. 

They also collaborated with other organizations to establish a Rapid Response Mechanism in Cabo Delgado and received funds to carry out rescue activities in water, sanitation, health, food security and livelihood support in agriculture, livestock and fisheries.
