Humanitarian context

Myanmar is a country in Southeast Asia. The population consists of numerous ethnic groups speaking over 100 different languages and dialects. The country was under military rule for decades and largely isolated from the rest of the world. A new Constitution entered into force in Myanmar in 2008, which initiated a process of democratization.

Political uncertainty is part of the daily lives of many Myanmar people. Since 2012, the democratically elected Government was headed by Aung San Suu Kyi. However, in 2021 she was overthrown in a coup after years of disputes with the military. Since then, the country has been ruled by the army. The many years of political turmoil have left their mark. Myanmar remains one of the poorest countries in Asia. Half of the population lives below the poverty line and has one of the lowest literacy rates in the world.

Our activity

In Myanmar, Action Against Hunger continues to work to strengthen access to health services and nutritional security in Rakhine, Sagaing and Kayah states. By empowering different stakeholders, the organization helps vulnerable groups, such as pregnant and nursing women, infants and children, gain easier access to quality nutritional services and improve their food security.

To this end, in 2022 Action Against Hunger supported nutrition centres in treating children with moderate or severe acute malnutrition in communities and at home. It also set up community service points in these centres, where awareness-raising sessions, discussions and training on psychological first aid were held.

In addition, Action Against Hunger provided alternative, strengthened and sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable households, so that they could improve their profits and reduce their food insecurity. To this end, we not only offered training in finance and business skills, but also on technical and professional aspects of key areas, such as granting grants and the formation of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA).
