Humanitarian context

In 2022, Sierra Leone experienced an increase in poverty levels. Food insecurity affected 1.6 million people, 20% of the country's population, while nearly 30% of children under five were stunted. The protests erupted due to the rise in basic product prices caused by the conflict in Ukraine and an inflation rate of 21.3%, the highest since the end of the civil war.

In addition, Sierra Leone faces climate challenges due to deforestation, erosion and changes in rainfall patterns, affecting agriculture and community resilience.

Our activity

Action Against Hunger implements climate change-related projects to improve agricultural resilience through sustainable land management, intercropping and access to weather information.

Action Against Hunger also supports farmers in Moyamba district to improve the peanut value chain through agro-ecological practices and collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and the private sector. Following a national assessment in 2021, they opened a new base in Bonthe due to the high prevalence of undernutrition (7.8%). They implemented a multisectoral project to improve the nutritional status of vulnerable communities, facilitating access to services for the detection, prevention and treatment of undernutrition, as well as safe water, sanitation and resilience to climate change. In addition, the PROSSAN project improved the quality of health services in urban and rural centres, and focused on the well-being of adolescents through adapted spaces and school health clubs.
